Music and special projects

Music is at the heart of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Please help us to ensure our music programme continues to grow and thrive.

St Martin’s is well known for its music-making. Alongside the many orchestras, ensembles and singers we welcome for performances at the church each year, we also run our own concerts of choral work led by Director of Music, Andrew Earis. Over the past year, this is an area of our work we have been extending and we now present many new opportunities to enjoy the music of our three resident choral ensembles: the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Choral Scholars and St Martin’s Voices.

The Sound of St Martins

In 2014 we launched a new choral concert series: The Sound of St Martin’s, combining inventive programming with the talents of our home-grown musical ensembles.

Great Sacred Music

Every Thursday at 1.00pm, we now present Great Sacred Music, our 35-minute lunchtime sequence to speak to heart, head and soul. Led by Sam Wells and St Martin’s Voices, it explores through song, readings and prayer the great classical music of our religious heritage. Great Sacred Music is free and open for everyone to enjoy.

The Choral Scholarship Scheme

Alongside these new programmes, we continue to offer our Choral Scholarship scheme,  our flagship choral music education programme. Every academic year, ten scholars are appointed, many of whom are music college students or recent graduates. As well as singing at 1.00pm Choral Eucharist and 4.30pm Choral Evensong every Wednesday during term-time, the Choral Scholars also gain concert experience and benefit from an extensive programme of training and education in different aspects of church and choral music.

Donors who fund the complete training of a Choral Scholar at a cost of £3,ooo per academic year, can name the scholarship.

St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition

The St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition exists to promote young and emerging chamber music groups. The prize is a series of professional engagements around the UK through the Making Music Promoter Member network. Winners also receive ongoing marketing support from St Martin’s and use of our rehearsal spaces. Donations towards the cost of running the series and supporting our winners are gratefully received. We are already looking to the 2016 competition and are fundraising to help us with the cost of again running the competition next year.

We rely on the generous support of our donors and patrons to enable our annual music programme to thrive – and to grow.

Please make a gift to support our music programme.

Education at St Martin’s

Our lecture series and study groups feature a wide range of thought provoking speakers and are attended by a growing number of people of all faiths and none. You can read about our current programmeor browse our educational archive and resources to see the types of topics which have been explored in the past. In order to keep the events as accessible as possible we keep them free: contributions towards the cost of running the programme and providing other high quality educational resources are gratefully received.

Unrestricted Gifts

An unrestricted gift can be used as and when it is needed most. This may contribute to the church’s work with homeless and vulnerable people, maintenance of the buildings and facilities, or to build upon our ever growing education and arts programmes.
