Henry Wong Doe Piano
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, pianist Henry Wong Doe has garnered top prizes, including two “Audience Favourite” prizes in the Arthur Rubinstein, Busoni and Sydney International Piano Competitions.
Henry Wong Doe has performed in Carnegie Hall, New York, Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh, Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay in Singapore, the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv. He has been a featured artist at the Busoni International Piano Festival in Bolzano, Italy, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago, USA and the Brussels Piano Festival in Belgium. Highlights of the 2016-17 season include debut performances in China (Shenyang Conservatory), London (St.Martin-in the Fields) and a return engagement in New York at the Music on Madison series.
Performances with orchestra include the Pittsburgh Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Australian Chamber and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestras under the batons of Christopher Hogwood, Mendi Rodan, Edvard Tchivzel, Michael Christie and Marko Letonja. Appearances on television and radio include BBC Radio 3 (UK), ABC Classics FM and Channel 9 (Australia), Concert FM and TVNZ (New Zealand), WNYC Radio (New York), WFMT Radio (Chicago), WQED Radio (Pittsburgh), RTBF and Canal La Deux (Belgium), and Kolhamusica (The Musical Voice) Israel.
Henry has released three commercial recordings on the Rattle, Klavier and Trust labels. His latest disc Landscape Preludes (Rattle Records, RAT-D046) was critically acclaimed both in New Zealand (New Zealand Herald) and the United States (Classics Today magazine). His next release on Rattle Records will include Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and a zigzagged gaze (2017) by New Zealand composer Eve de Castro-Robinson. Henry received an Arts Grant from Creative NZ (Arts Council of New Zealand) to complete this project, to be released in November 2017.
Henry Wong Doe studied at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and Indiana University Bloomington (USA) before earning a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School in New York. His teachers have included Susan Smith, Bryan Sayer, Evelyne Brancart, Leonard Hokanson and Joseph Kalichstein. Henry is currently Associate Professor of Piano and Keyboard Area Chair at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is currently on sabbatical leave from his teaching duties at IUP.
