The Southend Girls’ Choir was formed in 1988 and consists of singers from Southend and South East Essex, aged 8 – 19, including a training choir for younger singers, and a chamber choir, Chorus Sirenum, for former choir members. The Choir has performed on concert tours widely in Europe, US, Canada, Australia, Singapore and The Seychelles. Performances on tours have seen the choir singing in the Sydney Opera House, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Toronto , Montreal and Quebec Cathedrals, St Mark’s Venice, St Peter’s Rome, and major cathedrals across Europe.
The Choir regularly performs in major London concert halls and churches, including Royal Albert Hall, St James’s Piccadilly and St Martin in the Fields. The choir is frequently engaged to perform for corporate functions, including singing in London’s Mansion House, and in prestigious London hotels. In 2013 the choir produced 4 performances of Britten’s opera “Noye’s Fludde” in Essex and London, with Arts Council England funding, to enable the choir to include 400 school children in these productions.
The Southend Girls’ Choir has performed in the BBC Proms on several occasions, most recently performing “Carmina Burana” in 2015, and has appeared on BBC TV and Radio in both live and recorded performances. The choir works regularly with British Youth Opera, and members of the choir have taken part in performances of “La Bohème” and “Cunning Little Vixen” with the company.
This month the choir will once again perform in St Mark’s Venice, as part of a week long concert tour, and in 2018 will perform in Australia and Hong Kong.
The Southend Girls’ Choir is supported jointly by Southend Borough Council and the Southend Choirs’ Trust.
