New Ideas Chamber Orchestra is more than a modern classical string ensemble. Playing by memory and mixing classical and pop idioms with non-traditional string instrument techniques, singing, speaking, as well as involving elements of minimalist choreography on stage the group creates sublime, ethereal and energetic musical experience.
For those who may think “new music” means something bare and out-of-reach, listening to and watching NICO performing Gediminas Gelgotas’ luxurious and acclaimed new compositions will transform you into a sophisticated enthusiast. NICO also plays compositions by Reich, Adams, Riley, Glass, Richter, Tavener, Pärt, Lauridsen and Hamel, and incorporates some of their own stunning “transcriptions” of traditional composers (Bach, Vivaldi, etc.) into the performances. It is amazing how NICO makes their music so accessible and entertaining, turning themselves into the modern classical music equivalent of rock stars.
In 2015, NICO made its debut in prestigious Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig with Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kristjan Järvi and premiered 1st symphony of Gediminas Gelgotas „Extracultural”. In 2013 NICO album Music For Strings was released by Peermusic Classical. The group, highly acclaimed by both the public and the critics, has performed at numerous prestigious venues like the Roundhouse and Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), 21er Haus – The Museum of Contemporary Art (Vienna), Gewandhaus (Leipzig), as well as various well-known festivals as the Usedom Music Festival (Germany), Festspillene i Elverum (Norway), The Baltic Triennial of Arts, Gaida Festival, Vilnius Festival (Lithuania), Sacrum Non Profanum (Poland) and others.
NICO was founded in 2006 by a Lithuanian composer Gediminas Gelgotas. The artists of NICO are young, professional and adventurous musicians, winners of many international competitions.
