The Youth Music Centre which has become one of the foremost Saturday morning music schools London was established in Bigwood House Hampstead Garden Suburb and is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary this year.
The essential aim of YMC is to create a happy environment within which young people from the age of eighteen months to seventeen years can come together to enjoy making music.
At YMC all children can take part in different activities from orchestra and chamber music to choir, music theory and general musicianship classes. Members of the staff can always be counted upon to help children and discuss the children’s progress with parents.
YMC orchestras and chamber ensembles have been frequently first- prize winners in the North London Music Festival and Spring Grove Festival. They have performed in the Purcell Room, South Bank Arts Centre, United Reform Church, Highgate and St. Marys Church, Finchley.
The orchestra performing today is YMC’s most advanced Chamber Orchestra, who meet every Saturday at 9 am to rehearse under the baton of Nigel Goldberg. YMC has five orchestras from beginner level to this outstanding group of players you will hear today. Most children started their journey at YMC in the Junior Musicianship classes for children from the age 18 months.
