Memories of Mendelssohn
2009 MARKS THE 200TH BIRTHDAY OF German composer, pianist and conductor Felix Mendelssohn. Programmes at St Martin's this month include a number of his best-loved and most famous vocal, orchestra, instrumental and chamber works performed by the Belmont Ensemble (Saturday 6 June), Elysian Singers (Tuesday 23 June) and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble (Tuesday 30 June). Highlights include the opportunity to hear the great composer's ever popular and spectacular Violin Concerto in E minor with soloist Helena Wood (6 June).
A royal celebration for a royal birthday takes place on Saturday 13 June when St Martin's welcomes over 5s and their families for a Family Concert featuring works from the evening's Coronation Music programme for HRH The Queen's official birthday. Join John Landor and the LMA Orchestra for a rollicking adventure where audiences listen, learn and participate.
This month also features rising star Warren Mailley-Smith (piano) (Tuesday 9 June) fresh from his Carnegie Hall debut performing Gershwin's original solo piano version of Rhapsody in Blue. Saturday 25 June is the second Concert for Peace and Youth in which the London Chorus performs Carl Orff's infamous Carmina Burana in aid of the Footballs4fun charity helping children in Africa. The Darius Brubeck Quartet will also make an appearance.
