Rachmaninov Vespers by Candlelight
8:00pm - Friday 16 January 2009

Encoro
Sarah Tenant-Flowers Director

Launched to great acclaim in January 2007 at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Encoro is a choir co-directed by its founders Janet Lince and Sarah Tenant-Flowers. This new approach to choir direction offers not only a wider perspective and range of interpretation to Encoro’s singers, but also offers opportunities for collaboration, pooling of ideas, resources and experience for the two conductors. Each prepared programme is usually performed twice in difference venues, directed by each conductor in turn. Members of Encoro are drawn from amongst the finest amateur singers in the southern region and its repertoire aims to encompass a fascinatingly diverse range of music with a strong commitment to commissioning new work, reflecting the wide interests of the two directors. Previous concerts have included performances in London, Douai Abbey and Merton and Keble Colleges, Oxford and the group has recently recorded a sound track for the film The Thirteenth Day to be released next year. Forthcoming plans include recordings of Vaughan Williams Oxford Elegy and Bernard Rose’s St Catherine: An Ode for Classical Communications, performances of Rachmaninov’s Vespers at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London and Wantage and performances of works by contemporary New Zealand composers in Oxford and at Douai Abbey.

SARAH TENANT-FLOWERS Conductor Sarah studied music at Oxford and Durham Universities, arts administration at the Roehampton Institute and conducting with Sir Charles Groves, Peter Erdei from the Liszt Academy, Laszlo Heltay, and Alan Hazeldine. She is a Director of the Association of British Choral Directors and the numerous choirs with which she has worked include the Cape Town Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, The Reading Bach Choir, the Kantorei der Friedenskirche of Dusseldorf, the Guildford, Croydon and Sevenoaks Philharmonic Choirs and Linden Baroque Choir. Up until July 2007 she was Musical Director of one of the UK’s most innovative amateur choirs, Harlow Chorus, and is currently co-director of Encoro, Choir Director for the University of Nottingham and artistic director of professional choir Singscape. Sarah is Associate Music Director of the Brandenburg Sinfonia, with whom she works overseas and appears regularly in London and throughout the UK. Other orchestras and ensembles which she has conducted include the City of London Sinfonia, City of London Chamber Players, Britten Sinfonia, Ensemble Bash, Fiori Musicali, and the Alberni and Brandenburg Symphony Orchestras. Former posts include administrator of the televised Choir of the Year Competition, Artistic Director of Music at Oxford, and General Manager of The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers, with whom she has worked worldwide.
