Lunchtime Concert - Lawson Trio

Formed in Cambridge in 2000, the Lawson Trio pursues a busy concert schedule, bringing a wide range music to audiences of all ages. Recent British venues have included the South Bank Centre, Chester Summer Festival, the Lake District Summer Music Festival and Queen's University Belfast, while concerts abroad have taken them to Germany and Finland.

The Trio's commitment to encouraging younger musicians and audiences has led to an exciting collaboration with the Schubert Ensemble, working alongside them on their 'Chamber Music 2000' project. To this end, the Lawson Trio has given masterclasses and workshops in many schools in the UK, culminating in concerts at the South Bank and Steinway Hall. In February 2010 the Trio organised, hosted and performed in a Gala Concert celebrating ten years of Chamber Music 2000, at the Purcell Room. Performing alongside the Lawson Trio at this event were the Schubert Ensemble and groups of young musicians (drawn from Primary and secondary schools, and specialist music institutes) which the Trio had been coaching. In association with this event the Lawson Trio commissioned ten new pieces (from such composers as Anthony Powers, Paul Patterson and Cheryl Frances Hoad)and gave the world premiere of their own commission by David Knotts.

In addition to their formal studies as Junior Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellows at the RAM, the Lawson Trio has performed in masterclasses with artists including the Endellion, Chilingirian and Fitzwilliam Quartets and Sigmund Nissel. The group has received extensive coaching from the Florestan Trio at the Britten Pears School, Aldeburgh and benefits from regular sessions with Martin Lovett.

The Trio has a particular passion for lesser-known British gems and championing new music. Their schedule for 2010 includes performances at Bath International Festival, and Queen's University, Belfast, as well as for music societies across the UK.

Programme
David Knotts - The Long Way Home

David Knotts: David Knotts first came to public attention as a finalist in the 1994 Young Musician of the Year Competition. Following the extremely successful première of his first large-scale orchestral work by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2000 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, David Knotts has shown himself as one of the freshest and most individual young voices writing in Britain today. His exceptionally warm and lyrical style has brought commissions and performances from some of the country's finest soloists, orchestras and chamber-music ensembles including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and English National Opera. Recent highlights have included The Count Arnau for Bassoon and Orchestra, commissioned by the BBC and a new piece for the Schubert Ensemble, premièred at the South Bank in a concert to celebrate the birthday of composer Howard Skempton.

Judith Weir - Piano Trio Two

Judith Weir: Judith Weir's music has achieved considerable popularity with audiences and critics alike. Her music is characterised by a distinctive textural clarity and a lucid but idiosyncratic harmonic idiom. Often drawing on sources from medieval history, as well as the traditional stories and music of her native Scotland, she is best known for her operas and theatre works, although she has also achieved considerable international renown for her extensive catalogue of orchestral and chamber works. Her orchestral music has been performed around the world and commissioned by the leading orchestras such as Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, CBSO and the Minnesota Orchestras.

Joseph Haydn - Trio in G major

The Lawson Trio appear with the kind support of the Concordia Foundation. The CONCORDIA FOUNDATION was established in 1994 and became a registered charity in 1995 with Yehudi Menuhin as its patron. Founded by Gillian Humphreys, international soprano out of her real concern that it is important to build bridges of friendship and excellence through Music and the Arts.
