Find out when to hear the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields performing throughout December.

 

Thursday 5 December, 6.30pm: Lighting of the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square

From 6.00pm, come and join the Choir as they sign carols around the tree, the gift to London from the Norwegian people.

Free, on Trafalgar Square from 6.00pm, Lighting of the Christmas Tree begins at 6.30pm.


Sunday 8 December, 5.30pm: Blessing of the Crib in Trafalgar Square

Gather at the heart of Trafalgar Square for the blessing of the crib, designed by artist Tomoaki Suzuki with figures inspired by Londoners from around the world. 

Free, meet on the church steps at 5.20pm for a torch-lit procession to the Square led by the Salvation Army Band.


Sunday 15 December, 6.30pm: Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Traditional carols for congregation are mixed with pieces sung by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields as we explore the significance of the Christmas story.

This is a church service so free and no tickets required, but we recommend getting there early to be certain of a seat. Doors open 5.45pm.


Monday 16 December, 7.30pm: The Joys of Christmas

With music from John Rutter, Tavener, Laurisden and Handel, as well as carols for brass, organ and audience. Performed by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields and Brandenburg Brass, with Nicholas Werne on the organ and Andrew Earis conducting.

Tuesday 17 December, 6.30pm: Community Carols

The Christmas story is told in carols and readings, through the voices of those who live and work around Trafalgar Square. Music sung by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

This is a church service so free and no tickets required, but we recommend getting there early to be certain of a seat. Doors open 5.45pm.


Sunday 22 December, 8.10am: BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship, “Exalting the humble and meek”

In this service we explore the ways in which God comes to us in the birth of a child to turn our values upside down and reveal to us his true riches. Led by Revd Dr Sam Wells with music from the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Join us in the church at 7.45am, or listen in on BBC Radio 4 at 8.10am.

6.30pm: Welcome all Wonders

Celebrating the Christmas story in poetry, word and song, the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields perform this beautiful Cantata by Richard Shepard. This moving work is based on Richard Crashaw’s Hymn of the Nativity.

This is a church service so free and no tickets required.


Monday 23 December, 4.00pm: Carols for Christmas by Candlelight

Join the St Martin’s Voices in this joyful celebration of Christmas.

7.30pm: The Lantern Carols: A Choral Celebration of Christmas

Andrew Earis conducts the St Martin’s Voices in a world premier performance of Sasha Johnson Manning’s The Lantern Carols. The evening also features music by Rutter, Howells, Leighon and Vaughan Williams.

Tuesday 24 December, Christmas Eve, 6.30pm: Parish Carol Service

A candlelit service of words, music and reflections on the Christmas story with the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

This is a church service so free and no tickets required, but we recommend getting there early to be certain of a seat. Doors open 5.45pm.

11.15pm: Midnight Mass

The climax of our Advent preparations, led by the Clergy and Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
