News St Martin – Talking Points

Lent at St Martin’s This Lent in our 10.00am Eucharist the preachers will explore our Lent theme Power and Passion. In our 6.30pm Evening Services, members of St Martin’s Community share their reflections and experiences on The Cross, Jesus and Me.

Today is our Head Verger Ralph Smith’s last Sunday before his retirement. After the 10.00am service in St Martin’s Hall we will be thanking him for his wonderful service to St Martin’s. If you would like to express your thanks you can sign the card and/or give a donation in the Hall immediately after the service.

Today/Living the Questions evolves Living the Questions continues with our aim of giving people a place to bring their questions about the Christian faith and their spiritual experience, meeting after coffee, at 12.15 in the Austen Williams Room, 6 St Martin’s Place. This term’s dates: 24 Feb, 10, 17 Mar. All are welcome. Further details: richard.carter@smitf.org

Tomorrow/Lent Study Course 2013 is taking place at St Martin-in-the-Fields each Monday night during Lent from Monday 18 February-25 March. The theme is Power and Passion: Six Characters in Search of Resurrection, based on Sam Wells’ book which was chosen as The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book in 2007. Flyers are available in church. Please fill in an application and return as soon as possible, together with £12 which covers the cost of the book.

This week/LGBT Singing Workshop “Many Voices” Changing Attitude Greater London and anyone who would like to join us (all welcome) are holding a fun voice workshop on Tuesday 26 February at 6.30pm in the Parish Hall. Cost of workshop tuition £5. Please see Clare Herbert or contact her via the Parish Office if you would like to come.

This week/The St Martin’s breakfast group meets on 27 Feb in the Café in the Crypt from 7.45-8.30am. All welcome. For more information contact Caroline Essex via the Parish Office.

This week/The Archers (40s and 50s et al) Thursday 28 February at 7pm in the Austen Williams Room. We will start with Communion, followed by supper and discussion. The topic will be ‘Simply Living’ in preparation for the Melanesian Mission coming to St Martin’s on 2 June. Please contact James or Janet Allan via the Parish Office if you wish to attend.

This week/Silent Retreat Weekend, 1-3 March at the Sisters of St Andrew, Eden Hall, Edenbridge. This Ignatian style accompanied retreat will follow the journey of Call, Revelation, Wilderness and New Life, and give the opportunity for participants to meet twice with a member of the clergy team to be accompanied in their journey over the weekend. There are 3 places remaining, please speak to Revd Katherine Hedderly TODAY.

The Meditation Group meets next in the DSC on Weds 6 March at 7.00pm.

Quiet Day/Sacred Space in the City/Saturday 16 March 10am-4pm A day to explore sacred space in the heart of the city here St Martin’s. Confirmation at St Martin’s The Bishop of London, the Right Revd Richard Chartres, will preside at this year’s service of confirmation on Sunday 2 June. Classes will take place on Sunday mornings 12noon–1pm on the following dates: 10, 17, 24 March, 14, 28 April, 12, 26 May with a rehearsal on Saturday 1 June at 10.00am. If you are interested in joining the preparation classes please contact Revd Katherine Hedderly (katherine.hedderly@smitf.org) or phone the Parish Office on 0207 766 1100.

Feedback on the 10am Sunday liturgy The Sunday 10am Eucharist liturgy has undergone some changes in the past few months. As we are approaching the half-way point of the 6 month trial, the Church and Worship Committee would like to offer you a chance to give your feedback. For the next four weeks, one of us will be on hand at the front of church after the 10am service. Please do come and let us know what you think. Look out for us on the following dates: 24/2 (Sophie Tyler), 3/3 (Jeff Claxton), 10/3 (Caroline Essex), and 17/3 (Ruth Wooldridge).

Electoral Roll Under the Church Representation Rules, we are required to form a new Electoral Roll in 2013 (as part of the 6 year cycle which the rules specify). Everyone who wishes to be included on the new Roll, whether they are on the present Roll or not, must complete an application form by Sunday 10 March at the latest. Application forms will be available outside the Hall after the 10am Eucharist, or from the back of the church. You can also obtain a form from the Vergers at other times or from the Parish Office (020 7766 1100), or from the Electoral Roll officer (craig.norman@smitf.org). To be on the Electoral Roll, you have to be aged 16 or over, a baptised member of the Church of England (or a church in communion with it) and be resident in the parish or have worshipped here regularly for the last 6 months. Only those who are on the electoral roll are entitled to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, which this year takes place on 21 April.

So from now on we’ll be sending out a short Parish Pipeline email once a week, featuring details of services, news from the congregation or reflections from the clergy team. Registration has now opened for The Connection’s 23rd Annual Pilgrimage to Canterbury (24–27 May). Walking in Chaucer’s footsteps you’ll get to meet a wonderful and diverse group of The Connection’s supporters, some homeless, most not, but all enjoying the lively company, the spectacular countryside and the delicious food we have along the way!
