Advent Meditation: It Hated Me Before it Hated You

News St Martin – Talking Points

Monday 16 December 2013

If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you.

John 15.18-20

‘Hate’ is a hard word, full of malice and contempt. Think of times when apparently hate-filled words spoken to you have caused you to feel exiled or alone. Think too about times you may have hurt others and about the impact this had on them.

Although this terrible word hate is used three times in these short verses, we can draw strength and comfort from them. They speaks of Jesus understanding hate, and of having experienced the things that we experience. And, as in Holman Hunt’s picture, Jesus stands at the door, always ready to welcome us in.

Let us work together to create a kingdom on Earth, to be reminded of your teachings, guidance and strength, and to build each other up, rather than knock down; and to grow in faith all the days of our lives. Amen
