Advent Meditation: The Dawn From on High Will Break upon Us

News St Martin – Talking Points

Saturday 14 December 2013

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon  us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Luke 1.78-79

Have you ever spent a sleepless night, perhaps through grief or anxiety, thoroughly unable to rest – and then found to your surprise that with the light of the dawn, whilst your problems were no less real, you were able to find a calm that had evaded you through the dark hours of the night?

Or as a child were you ever terrified in the dark by the ticking and gurgling of a radiator or the footsteps of people passing by outside? Sounds that with the daylight became a harmless backdrop, benign and ignored.

There is something about the return of daylight that can calm us.

Spend some time today thinking of times when you have been grateful for the coming of morning. If it helps, write a list.

Loving God,
We give thanks this day that we are each one of us so precious to you.
We thank you for bringing us safely through the exile of the night.
We thank you for sending your beloved Son to be the light of the world to banish the darkness forever.
Amen.
