Advent Meditation: The Lord Was Not in the Fire

News St Martin – Talking Points

Friday 27 December 2013

And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

1 Kings 19.12

Sometimes, the Lord of Might speaks to us in the beauty and glory of nature, and sometimes we can find God through the beauty and the peace he gives within. We are reminded of Elijah’s ‘still small voice of calm’ and the last verse of the hymn Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and thy balm
Let strength be dumb, let flesh retire,
Speak through the earthquake wind and fire
O still small voice of calm.

Words, John Greenleaf Whittier. Tune, Hubert Parry.

This Christmastide may we know the love, joy, peace, awesome beauty and power of the Christ child in our hearts, this day and always. Amen.
