O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.

O come, thou Day-Spring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here.

As the darkness of night is put to flight by the light of the morning, so we look to God’s light to well up like a tidal wave, to shine into our hearts and set us free from the exile of the gloom which surrounds us. We look for God to reveal to us a clearer way, a brighter way.

God’s promise is that the Christ child will be that light to inspire us and guide our feet.


History says, Don’t hope
On this side of the grave,
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.
