Advent Meditation Week 4: Lord of Might

News St Martin – Talking Points

Sunday 22 December 2013

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,
In ancient times did’st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Sunday 22 December

But Moses said to God, “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, “The God of your ancestors has sent me to you”, and they ask me, “What is his name?” what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am…Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you””.

Exodus 3.13-15

O come, O come, thou Lord of might.

The hymn writer talks of God’s link with Moses being in cloud and majesty and awe in a remote place, where the mountainous terrain was presumably hostile and the path likely to be indistinct. In El Greco’s painting of Mount Sinai the pilgrims are on their way through the barren mountains to the hospitality of the monastery of St Catherine.

For us journeying in faith, we are surprised by God in places where we least expect. The Lord of Might comes to us through the smiling child and the eyes of a stranger. We need the support and the prayers of others to keep looking but even in the most unlikely places we too can encounter “majesty and awe”.

Jesus said the Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure buried in a field.

We must go and find it.
