Advent Meditation: Why are You Disquieted Within Me?

News St Martin – Talking Points

Friday 6 December 2013

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.

Psalm 42.11

Advent is a time for waiting, and longing for God’s revelation, for the fullness of God’s glory which in the midst of war and personal difficulties can feel a long way off. Herbert Howells’ anthem Like as the Hart Desireth the Waterbrooks is a setting of the first three verses of Psalm 42 and expresses, in unison male voices, the longing for God to come through the struggles of the present time:

Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks
So longeth my soul after thee O God.
My soul is athirst for God, yea even for the living God.
When shall I come to appear before the presence of God?
My tears have been my meat day and night,
While they daily say unto me “Where is now thy God?”

O God, open my heart and mind to ponder on you and give me hope this day. Amen.
