Celebrating 20 years of the ordination of women to the priesthood

News St Martin – Talking Points

Wednesday 12 February 2014

On Saturday 3 May this year there will be a national celebration, held in London, of the 20th anniversary of the ordination of women to the priesthood.

This will begin at around 1.00pm in College Garden, Westminster Abbey, where food will be on sale or people can bring picnics. At 2.00pm a procession will move off and will walk to St Paul’s Cathedral, assisted by road marshals, arriving at around 4.30pm.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will greet the crowds on the steps of the Cathedral, following which a service will take place at 5.00pm. Tickets for the service are being distributed to the 1994 cohort of women priests and a small number to each diocese, allocated by ballot particularly to those who campaigned for the ordination of women several decades ago.  There will be an audio relay of the service outside the Cathedral.

Please do not contact either the Diocese of London, St Paul’s or St Martin-in-the-Fields to enquire about tickets. We will publish further news if surplus tickets are available.

Anyone who wishes to join the gathering at Westminster Abbey, the procession and/or the gathering outside St Paul’s Cathedral is very welcome to do so. This is an occasion for all those who wish to, lay or ordained, male or female, to celebrate the ordination of women priests.
