LSO Live and the Templeton Prize at St Martin-in-the-Fields

News St Martin – Talking Points

Thursday 15 May 2014

Last week we played host to two large events at St Martin’s, as the LSO performed to large crowds on Trafalgar Square, and the Templeton Prize was this year awarded here at the church.

For our congregation and regular visitors last Sunday you may have noticed a few more faces around the site as St Martin’s became the basecamp for eighty young musicians who took part in the London Symphony Orchestra’s outdoor concert in Trafalgar Square. The young musicians from the LSO Discovery programme had the opportunity to play alongside the professional players of the LSO, under the baton of their principal conductor Valery Gergiev. Working in harmony with such a prestigious organisation was a real highlight to St Martin’s music team and it inspires us as we look to the future of our own music making. Thanks to all at St Martin’s for making this possible.

On Wednesday evening, Czeck priest and philosopher Msgr Prof Tomáš Halík was awarded the Templeton Prize at a large ceremony here at St Martin’s, which included performances from Eric Whitacre and Laura Mvula. Find out more about Msgr Halík and watch some highlights from the ceremony on the Templeton Prize website.
