News St Martin – Talking Points

Advent and Christmas Services The full list of Advent & Christmas services is available in our whole site brochure for December and on our website. There will be no ticketing for capacity Christmas services: Nine Lessons and Carols, Community Carols and Parish Carols. Due to popular demand we will be holding two Parish Carol services on Christmas eve at 4.30pm & 7.00pm. Doors open 45 mins before the services start and as the church is often full we encourage you to arrive in plenty of time to be certain of a seat.

Today/BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship: The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me, exploring issues of debt and liberation in Jesus’ ministry and in contemporary society. The preacher is the Bishop of Stepney, Rt Revd Adrian Newman, with the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Either join us in church at 7.45am or listen on BBC Radio 4 at 8.10am.

Today/Crèche at St Martin’s For the 0-4 age group, with trained childcare leaders, now takes place in the Austen Williams Room every Sunday. Please ask a steward to show you where to go. Parents are invited to drop off children by 10am and collect after the service.

Today/Children’s Programme – C Club meets after the 10am service in the Dick Sheppard Chapel for prayers and a Christmas art project!

Today/Christmas Flowers Today there will be a collection for the flowers to decorate the church at Christmas. If you would like to make a donation please see Cathy Miller at the end of the 10am service today.

Today/The Advent Booklet, “The End of the World?“, our theme for Advent, written by members of the St Martin’s community, is now available (including a large print version). With reflections for each day of Advent and Christmas. Suggested donation £3.

This week/Archer’s Christmas Dinner 18 December, 7.30pm This year’s Archer’s Christmas Dinner will be at the Union Jack Club on Thursday 18 December starting at 7.30pm. Please book with Michael Moran as soon as possible to insure a place, via the Parish Office. The price for this wonderful Christmas Dinner and Event is £25.

This week/Saturday 20 December, Open Circle (a friendly group in our 20s, 30s and beyond), Christmas Party: Bowling & Japanese Meal Join us at Bloomsbury Lanes for an hour of bowling 5-6pm (cost £6), followed by noodles on Old Compton Street (www.tarorestaurants.co.uk), 7pm. You are welcome to come to either or both; please let us know at StMartinsOpenCircle@gmail.com so that we can confirm bookings!

Thank you everyone who supported the 88th BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal with St Martin-in-the-Fields which was broadcast last week. If you missed the Appeal or BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal: Making a Difference with Aasmah Mir (which explains how the money is used) you can listen again on BBC iPlayer. Our volunteers are now opening the post and counting the donations. We’ll let you know how we are doing before Christmas.

Thank you to those who supported last Sunday’s Book Sale. £140 was raised for the Church in Iraq, c/o Canon Andrew White.

The Meditation Group meets on Tuesday 23 December at 6.30pm in the DSC. The meditation group meets on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month.

The St Martin’s breakfast group meets next on 7 January 2015 in the Café in the Crypt from 7.45-8.30am. All welcome. Contact Caroline Essex or Dan Kaszeta via the Parish Office.

Open Circle Retreat Information and application forms will be available today from Andrew Bennison, and Ivan Yuen. The twenties and thirties (and beyond) group will be returning to Hilfield Friary on 13-15 February 2015 where we will explore the theme ‘Spring in us’. Cost £85 for the weekend. Spaces are limited so don’t miss out!

Save the date: The Silent Retreat will take place at Pleshey Retreat House from Friday 27 February – Sunday 1 March 2015. More details to follow.

For your prayers We pray regularly for the long-term sick at our Friday 1.15pm Eucharist. Please remember in your prayers – Sibyl Allen, Mary Henry, Allan Whalley, Jim Minchin, Zara Bowness-Smith, Adepeju Seriki.

Join the Occasional Singers of St Martin’s! Once a month, the Occasional Singers lead the music at 10am parish Eucharist, and we are looking for new members! Please email Alice at choir@smitf.org if you would like to know more.
