News St Martin – Talking Points

Today/Young People’s Guide to the Readings A guide to the Scripture-readings including word-search, colouring pages and crayons, is available from the Stewards.

Today/Children’s Program – C Club meets after the 10am service. After stocking up on biscuits and squash, young people (and grown ups accompanied by children) are welcome to the Dick Sheppard Chapel for a 20 minute programme of creative, embodied learning and prayer.

Today/Would you like to read in church? We are hoping to add to the number of those who read the lessons at the 10.00am and 6.30pm Sunday services at St Martin’s. If you are interested please inform Gay Catto via the Parish Office. There will be a training session for new readers today straight after the 10.00am Eucharist with Revd Richard Carter.

Today/Living the Questions Today’s topic – “Paul’s Theology: Sin, Faith, and What it Means to Be Saved.” This open discussion group, based on DVD material, encourages participants to ask and learn about the Christian tradition, and to live into the answers we discover. Austen Williams Room, 6 St Martin’s Place, 12.15-1.45pm. Future dates are 29 Sept; 20, 27 Oct. Come for one session or come for them all! Join us for lunch afterwards in the Crypt.

Today/Holy Cross At our 6.30pm service we will be focusing upon the meaning of the cross and dedicating St Martin-in-the-Fields’ inspirational new Processional Cross by sculptor Brian Catling. All are welcome to join us for this special service and for a drinks reception afterwards in the Hall!

This week/Saturday 21 September, Open House 2013 We will be welcoming visitors as part of Open House London this coming weekend. There will be free tours of the church and bellringing demonstrations with the chance to ring a bell! Prayers will be said on the hour in church and the day is hosted by volunteers from the St Martin’s community.

This week/Open Circle (a friendly group in our 20’s, 30’s and beyond), Board Games, 21 September, 7 pm, Austen Williams Room An evening of board games and wine. A great opportunity to catch up and get competitive after our summer break! BYOB and any board games you have squirrelled away. Crèche at St Martin’s Our new Crèche has started for the 0-4ish age group. Future dates will be Sundays 22 September, 6, 27 October, 10, 24 November, 8, 22 December.

Autumn Education Lecture Series 2013/Faith on the Frontiers What does it mean to be a Christian in the 21st Century? This exciting lecture series begins on 23 September at 7.00pm with Mark Oakley, Rosemarie Mallett and Clare Herbert talking about faith: On the Frontiers of a World City. Other dates for your diary: 7 Oct June Osborne; 21 Oct Stanley Hauerwas and Sam Wells; 4 Nov Alastair McIntosh; 11 Nov Lord Christopher Patten; 18 Nov Richard Kearney. St Martin’s International Group We are looking for 20 volunteers from the congregation of St Martin-in-the-Fields to begin a new initiative from 6 October providing welcome and hospitality once a week for some of the homeless and destitute migrants, refugees and non EU foreign nationals who use our church. We would like to develop our church’s long term commitment to those who are homeless or stateless, by undertaking face to face work with individuals who are on our doorstep and regularly in our pews. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to one Sunday a month meeting at the Connection from 1.00pm-4.30pm to help provide lunch, access to facilities and to build understanding. More information and application forms for those wishing to apply to become volunteers are available from the Vergers or a member of the clergy team or the Parish Office. Application forms must be returned by today, Sunday 15 September to Revd Richard Carter for the selection process. There will be a briefing session for the volunteers selected on Sunday 29 September at 1.30pm and the first training for volunteers on Wednesday 2 October at 6.30pm at The Connection.

The Archers (40s and 50s et all) Thursday 26 September, 7pm Austen Williams Room. We meet for Eucharist, supper together and then a documentary film about the Melanesian Simply Living Mission to UK which ends at St Martin’s with everyone dancing! How can we learn to live more simply and with greater respect for God’s creation and for one another? Members of Archers old and new are welcome. All Saints Fulham, Evensong Festival of 3 Choirs/Sunday 29 September 6.00pm The Choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Luke’s Chelsea and All Saints Fulham join together in a festival of Choral Evensong. Retiring collection in support of The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields and West London Churches Homeless Concern.

Special St Luke’s Tide Events Please put the dates of the weekend 19-20 October in your diaries if you are intrigued by the issues of health, mental health, healing, inclusion and faith.  Sat 19 October, 10.30am-4.30pm “Places of Belonging”, A Day Conference at St Martin’s to continue the conversation about Disability, Inclusion and God. Speakers John Swinton, Chair of Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen, Mims Hodson of our own congregation, and Rachel Wilson a curate in the Diocese of Southwark. All are welcome. Sun 20 October, 10.00am, Holy Communion for St Luke’s Day, Preacher: John Swinton.

Learning and Leadership Opportunity/Saturday 26 Oct: Theatre Arts and Leadership Day Parish members are invited to a day-long workshop at the world-famous Cardboard Citizens Theatre in Whitechapel. Get to know younger and older parishioners; practice leadership exercises and games; learn how to express yourself, and your vision of St. Martin’s – in image and rhythm, in word and dramatic action.
