News St Martin – Talking Points

Today/Crèche at St Martin’s For the 0-4ish age group. Future dates will be Sundays 8, 22 December.

Today/Young People’s Guide to the Readings A guide to the Scripture-readings, including word-search, colouring pages and crayons, is available from the Stewards.

Today/An Open-Handed Peace At St Martin-in-the-Fields the Disability Awareness Task Group have suggested that we explore a new way of sharing the Peace. So until Advent we are using an “Open-Handed Peace”. We stand with hands out, palms upwards, for another to place their hands gently and carefully on ours. So please join us for an open handed peace today and extend the welcome of Christ to the other whose presence we value.

Today/Children’s Programme – C-Club is going to the National Gallery! We will assemble to leave at the back of church after the first hymn, and return to church just before Communion.

Today/The Advent Booklet, “Revelation in Exile”, our theme for Advent, written by members of the St Martin’s community, is available today (including a large print version). With reflections for each day of Advent and Christmas, it will also be available daily on our website from Advent Sunday 1 December. Suggested donation £3.50.

Today/Stewards’ Advent and Christmas Briefing takes place at 11.30am in the church.

Today/Book Launch, The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Art and Architecture, 2nd edition 2013 You are warmly invited to the launch of this new edition, edited by Tom Devonshire Jones today at 12noon, in St Martin’s Hall, during the usual fellowship following the 10am service.

This week/Great Sacred Music, Thursdays at 1.00pm An exciting new thirty-minute sequence to speak to heart, head and soul, with Revd Dr Sam Wells exploring through reading and song the great classical music of our religious heritage. Performed by the St Martin’s Voices conducted by Andrew Earis. All welcome – retiring collection.

This week/Jeff Claxton will be re-licensed as Reader at a service at St Paul’s Cathedral on 26 November at 7.00pm. All are welcome to support Jeff at this service.

This week/Archers, Thursday 28 November, 7.00pm We begin with Holy Communion followed by a “Thanksgiving Supper.” As Archers coincides with Thanksgiving in the USA we thought it would be a good theme for an Archer’s celebration. For what are we thankful? If you would like to join us please contact Michael Moran via the Parish Office. Also we are making reservations for our Archer’s Christmas Dinner at The Union Jack Club on Thursday December 19. Please book with Michael Moran as soon as possible to insure a place. The price of this wonderful Christmas Dinner is £25.

This week/Elizabeth Mensah, who was a member of St Martin-in-the Fields from the mid-1980s onwards, passed away on 4 November. A service to celebrate her life, conducted by Revd Richard Carter, will take place at St Barnabas, Gorringe Park Avenue, Mitcham, Surrey CR4 2DJ, on Friday morning 29 November, at 9.30am, followed by burial at the London Road Cemetery. Info: from the Parish Office. Her family would like to thank the congregation and clergy of St Martin’s for their support and care and for their prayers during this time.

Cake Stall The Queen Eleanor Cycle Ride will run a cake stall after the 10am service on Sunday 1 December, on behalf of their work and support for the Connection at St Martin’s. Do come and buy or bring any donations that day. Enquiries to Roger Shaljean, via the Parish Office.

Next Sunday/Advent Carol Service at 6.30pm exploring in words and music our Advent theme ‘Revelation in Exile’. Preacher Revd Dr Sam Wells. Doors open 5.45pm.

Oasis for Advent and Epiphany Make space in the Christmas rush for Bible reading, reflection and creative activities on three evenings, Monday 2 December, Thursday 12 December and Monday 6 January, 7-9pm. The St Martin’s breakfast group meets next on 4 Dec in the Café in the Crypt from 7.45-8.30am. All welcome. For more information contact Caroline Essex via the Parish Office.

Club Wednesday meets next on Wednesday 4 December, beginning with Choral Eucharist at 1pm and followed by lunch at 6 St Martin’s Place. And then there will be a chance to share Christmas poems. Bring your favourite! All are welcome to attend!

The Meditation Group meets next in the DSC on Weds 4 December at 7.00pm.

Save the date The Silent Retreat will take place at Pleshey Retreat House from Friday 14 – Sunday 16 March 2014. More details to follow.

Saturday 30 November, Advent Procession at St Paul’s Cathedral We have a few tickets still available to members of the congregation for this service at St Paul’s Cathedral, marking the beginning of Advent with readings and music which describe the Christian journey of faith from darkness to light. The service starts at 6pm (please be seated by 5.35pm) and will last approximately 60 minutes. Please contact Angela Anderson if you would like tickets (angela.anderson@smitf.org, 020 7766 1107).
