News St Martin – Talking Points

Revd Richard Carter is away from St Martin’s for two weeks study leave, returning 10 February.

Today/Prayer for healing We will be setting aside the Dick Sheppard Chapel, 11.30am–12noon after the 10am morning service for anyone who would like to receive prayer for healing. Two members of the healing team will be available to pray with you.

Today/Twirties Planning Meeting (a friendly group in our 20’s, 30’s and beyond), 12.15pm in the Desmond Tutu Room. Please come and share ideas for forthcoming Twirties events for Spring 2013. All contributions warmly received. Those that wish to are invited to go out for lunch after the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting please do email in ideas for next term, things you might want to facilitate or lead or share with other members, so they can be fed in to the programme. This week/Wednesday 6 February/Club Wednesday will meet in the Austen Williams Room after the lunchtime Choral Eucharist. Visiting speaker, David McLachlan, will be talking with pictures about his recent trip to Lebanon. All are welcome.

This week/A Theology of Everyday Things: Thursdays 1.00pm Continuing this week, our Lunchbreak service reaches out to the many people who work around St Martin’s during the week. This year Revd Will Morris is leading three ten-week series of talks on a ‘Theology of Everyday Things’. Please pick up a flyer with more details at the back of Church.

Living the Questions evolves Living the Questions continues with our aim of giving people a place to bring their questions about the Christian faith and their spiritual experience, meeting after coffee, at 12.15 in the Austen Williams Room, 6 St Martin’s Place. Ash Wednesday/13 February Morning Prayer will be followed by 8.30am Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes. There will be a Choral Eucharist at 1pm and Sung Eucharist at 6.30pm. Both these services will include the Imposition of Ashes.

There will be a memorial service for the family and friends of Lydia Evans Lloyd in the Dick Sheppard Chapel on Thursday 14 February at 3.00pm. Her husband David wishes to extend an invitation to his friends at St Martin’s.

The funeral of Bridget Richmond who was a member of St Martin’s for many years and founded the International Club, will take place at St Martin-in-the-Fields on Saturday 16 February at 12noon. All are welcome to join us as we give thanks for her life.

Lent Study Course 2013 will take place at St Martin-in-the-Fields each Monday night during Lent from Monday 18 February-25 March. The theme is Power and Passion: Six Characters in Search of Resurrection, based on Sam Wells’ book which was chosen as The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book in 2007. Flyers are available in church. Please fill in an application and return as soon as possible, together with £12 which covers the cost of the book. All are welcome.

Silent Retreat Weekend, 1-3 March at the Sisters of St Andrew, Eden Hall, Edenbridge. This Ignatian style accompanied retreat will follow the journey of Call, Revelation, Wilderness and New Life, and give the opportunity for participants to meet twice with a member of the clergy team to be accompanied in their journey over the weekend. The retreat and reflections will be led by the Revd Richard Carter, Revd Katherine Hedderly and Revd David Jackson. Places are limited. Please fill in the application form available in church or from the clergy team and return to Elinor Newman in the parish office.

Confirmation at St Martin’s The Bishop of London, the Right Revd Richard Chartres, will preside at this year’s service of confirmation on Sunday 2 June. Classes will take place on Sunday mornings 12noon–1pm on the following dates: 10, 17, 24 March, 14, 28 April, 12, 26 May with a rehearsal on Saturday 1 June at 10.00am. If you are interested in joining the preparation classes please contact Revd Katherine Hedderly (katherine.hedderly@smitf.org) or phone the Parish Office on 0207 766 1100.

This year’s stewards’ training takes place between 11.30am and 1pm on Sunday 16 June.

Save the Date: The Parish weekend will take place at Worth Abbey 12-14 July, with an exciting programme for all the parish. Please put this date into your diary!

Electoral Roll Under the Church Representation Rules, we are required to form a new Electoral Roll in 2013 (as part of the 6 year cycle which the rules specify). Everyone who wishes to be included on the new Roll, whether they are on the present Roll or not, must complete an application form by Sunday 10 March at the latest. Application forms will be available outside the Hall after the 10am Eucharist, or from the back of the church. You can also obtain a form from the Vergers at other times or from the Parish Office (020 7766 1100), or from the Electoral Roll officer (craig.norman@smitf.org). To be on the Electoral Roll, you have to be aged 16 or over, a baptised member of the Church of England (or a church in communion with it) and be resident in the parish or have worshipped here regularly for the last 6 months. Only those who are on the electoral roll are entitled to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, which this year takes place on 21 April.
