Where Love and Sorrow Meet
A service to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967

Saturday 29 July, 10.30am

Preacher: Mark Oakley
Choir: London Gay Men’s Chorus

1950s Britain was a time of explicit government sanctioned persecution of homosexual men. In 1956 the Wolfenden Committee recommended partial decriminalisation. This finally became law on 27 July 1967. It was the beginning of a journey towards a greater justice for LGBTI people.

Our service will be a service of lament as we remember lives broken and oppressed by the persecution and discrimination LGBTI have suffered in the past and are still suffering today, but it will also be a service of honour, hope and celebration, remembering the courage of those who struggled for a greater justice, the transformation that has come, and looking to the future with hope for full equality and acceptance.

“Society and church are on a slow journey with LGBTI identity from endemic persecution through grudging tolerance to grateful celebration. Lamentably often churches have been the last to join the party. This service of lament and hope marks the 50th anniversary of a significant threshold in this journey and offers an opportunity to articulate a dream of a very different future.”
Revd Dr Sam Wells, St Martin-in-the-Fields

We hope to get as many people there as possible! And of course, you yourself are most welcome, please do come and support marking this important anniversary. The event is free and will be followed by a reception in St Martin’s Hall

The struggle for justice is not complete, and many still experience discrimination and hostility, particularly within the church and faith communities. Campaigning for full equality continues to this day.
