The Disarming Love of God: a Christmas message from Revd Dr Sam Wells

News St Martin – Talking Points

Wednesday 25 December 2013

A baby. A baby who was so cold, she wrapped him in swaddling clothes. The wise kings and the outcast shepherds came to worship him.

We think of God as domineering, bearded, old, angry, fearful, far away. But God is none of those things. Here is God – all swaddled up, intimate, needy, gorgeous, tiny – and hungry.

All wrapped up in swaddling clothes, Jesus is literally disarmed. This is the astonishing truth of Christmas. Jesus is God disarmed. The disarmed God of love. The disarming love of God.

Here is God, not distant and dreadful, but close and intimate. God, in the arms of a child-mother. She’s holding this tiny baby out to you. Here is God, for you, disarmed. Take this child, embrace this God. Let this baby disarm you.

Happy Christmas.

Revd Dr Sam Wells
Vicar, St Martin-in-the-Fields
