A sign for us

News St Martin – Talking Points

Sunday 22 December 2013

In all the busyness of our preparation and planning for Christmas, in the present buying, food preparing, carolling and wrapping, in all the anticipation, will we notice the sign that is given for us?

The sign of God’s love coming down among us, that gives meaning to our longing and shape to our lives?

In the midst of all this activity, like a compass that swings back to north, the sign remains the same. The sign is beauty, simplicity, kindness, gentleness, generosity, forgiveness and love. It is love alongside us, wanting to be with us:

The young woman is with child and shall bear a son and shall name him Immanuel. God with us.

The sign looks like a young couple travelling, preparing, anticipating new life, risking all for God. The sign looks like the generosity of those giving to the St Martin-in-the-Fields BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal, bringing hope to those who are homeless and vulnerable around this country. The sign looks like peacemakers encouraging others on the long walk to freedom, like the message you received on a Christmas card bringing warmth and love from someone who remembers you.

And could the sign also be within us, at our lowliest place? Will we recognise the sign of his treasure there, as our place of poverty becomes the place where Christ is born?

You will know him when he comes,

by the holy harmony,

which his coming makes in thee.

Words of a carol by Mark Sirett.
