Christmas at St Martin-in-the-Fields

Experience the full glory of the Christmas season with a feast of words, music and seasonal food at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 4JJ.

Main Christmas services

Sunday 2 December Advent Sunday, 6.30 pm Advent Carol Service

In words and music we explore our theme for Advent “Coming, Ready of Not”.  With the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Preacher: Revd Dr Sam Wells.  Doors open 5.30pm.  No tickets required but the church is often full and you are advised to arrive in plenty of time to be certain of a seat. 

Sunday 16 December, 6.30pm Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

The story of the birth of Jesus is told in this service of readings and music. Traditional carols are mixed with a variety of choir pieces as we explore the significance of the Christian story for us and reflect on what it means for us to welcome the Christ child.  Led by the Revd Dr Sam Wells and the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.  Doors open 5.30pm.  No tickets required but the church fills quickly and you are advised to arrive in plenty of time to be certain of a seat.

Tuesday 18 December, 6.30pm Community Carols

The Christmas story told in carols and readings, through the voices of those who live and work around Trafalgar Square led by Revd Katherine Hedderly with the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields.  Doors open 5.30pm.  All are welcome. No tickets required but come early to be certain of a seat.

Sunday 23 December, 6.30pm The Manchester Carols

An inspiring and magical contemporary retelling of the Christmas story, with words by poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, set to music by Sasha Johnson Manning. With the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Monday 24 December, Christmas Eve

2.30pm Crib Family Service

Led by the Clergy of St Martin-in-the-Fields.  A lively service of readings and carols particularly suitable for younger members of the family and including the Blessing of the Crib.  Doors open at 2.00pm. No tickets required.

6.30pm Parish Carol Service

Led by the Clergy of St Martin-in-the-Fields.  A Candlelit service of words, music and reflections on the Christmas story with the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.  Doors open 5.30pm. No tickets required but the church fills quickly and you are advised to arrive in plenty of time to be certain of a seat.

11.30pm Midnight Mass

The climax of all our Advent preparation and Christmas worship as we light the Christmas candle and welcome the Christ child. Led by the Clergy and Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.  The mass setting is Mozart’s Mass in F.  No tickets required.  Preacher: Revd Richard Carter.

Christmas Concerts for all the family

To celebrate Christmas we have a raft of ticketed concerts which everyone aged 3 to 103 can enjoy. It all kicks off on Saturday 1 December with Family Christmas Carols for everyone, young and old, to sing with gusto. Then on Friday 7 November two dazzling performers, Tine Thing Helseth on trumpet and Vilde Frang on violin, join us for the traditional Royal Norwegian Embassy Christmas Concert marking the arrival of the Oslo Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square.

Hear two of the country’s foremost choirs perform, with the Choir of Christ’s College Cambridge joining us for the Glory of Christmas by Candlelight on Thursday 13 December, and our very own Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields in The Joys of Christmas on Monday 17 December.

And don’t forget old favourites like the Carols for Shoppers on Saturday 15 December, and the resplendent Handel Messiah on both Friday 21 and Saturday 22 December.
