Susan Chan Piano (USA)

The New York Concert Review described Susan Chan as ‘a thoughtful musician and a sensitive player’, and The New Yorker called her ‘an energetic advocate for contemporary music’. The Fanfare magazine and BBC Music Magazine praised her ‘great technical finesse’ and ‘conspicuous refinement’ in her recordings.

Ms. Chan has performed as soloist and chamber musician on four continents. Such venues include Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall; Chopin’s birth house in Poland; and Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall. She has also performed on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago and the Seattle International Piano Festival Recital Series. She has appeared as soloist with the Dnepropetrovsk State Philharmonic (Ukraine), Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Portland Columbia Symphony. She is a founding member of the Rose City Trio and has performed chamber music with members of the Oregon Symphony, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and Hamburg Symphony.

Chan received first prizes in the Hong Kong Young Musicians Award Competition and the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition, and was winner in the Mozart Piano Concerto Competition at Indiana University and recipient of a 2013 Oregon Arts Commission Artist Fellowship. She also received ‘Special Citation for Championing Piano Music by Asian Composers’ recognition in The American Prize in Piano Performance 2015. Her CD discography includes East West Encounter I and East West Encounter II on the MSR Classics label, and the latest Echoes of China: Contemporary Piano Music released by Naxos. She holds a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University and pursued graduate studies at Yale University. She currently serves as an Associate Professor of Music and Piano Area Coordinator at Portland State University in Oregon, USA where she founded and directs the PSU Steinway Piano Series. Her major piano teachers include György Sebök, Menahem Pressler and Eleanor Wong. Chan is a Si-Yo Artist™.
