La Serenissima: Vivaldi and the Mad Monks of Venice

Saturday 02 July 2022

7:30 PM

La Serenissima is back at St Martin-in-the-Fields! Expect stellar playing and virtuoso fireworks, as they explore music by Vivaldi and his (often flamboyant) Venetian contemporaries.

They called Vivaldi “the red priest”, but in baroque Venice, being a clergyman was no guarantee of good behaviour. Vivaldi wasn’t the only firebrand in holy orders, and today Adrian Chandler and La Serenissima launch another extraordinary journey into this musical wonderland. That means Vivaldi, naturally, but also concertos and sonatas by Legrenzi, Lazzari and Bigaglia: “mad monks” who never let their vocation get in the way of some serious musical fun. The results are sometimes startling, but always entertaining – and you’ll never hear them played with more brilliance and flair.

Legrenzi Sonata à 4, Op 11 Book 3
Vivaldi Concerto for Violin in C RV 179
Ferdinando Antonio Lazzari Concerto for Two Trumpets in D
Diogenio Bigaglia Concerto for Violin and Organ in G minor
Vivaldi Concerto Madrigalesco in D minor RV 129
Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets in C RV 537

La Serenissima
Adrian Chandler Director/Violin

La Serenissima is the UK’s leading exponent of the music of eighteenth-century Venice. Praised for its ‘all-too-rare ability to make one’s pulse race afresh with every new project’ (Gramophone), La Serenissima has uncovered a plethora of neglected music, making it available to all through live performance, recording and outreach. Uniquely, the group’s entire repertoire is edited from source material.

Founded in 1994 by violinist Adrian Chandler, La Serenissima is recognised for its outstanding recording catalogue which is regularly featured on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, Scala Radio and internationally. The group’s work has been selected for major advertising campaigns (Versace, 2018) and film (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, 2020). La Serenissima has won two Gramophone Awards: for The French Connection (2010) and The Italian Job (2017); in 2018 album Vivaldi X2 topped the UK Classical Chart. New release Behind Closed Doors was hailed by BBC Music Magazine with a double 5 star review:

The performances by this accomplished ensemble are polished and invigorating. Chandler’s solo violin playing is articulate, warm-toned and communicative … A rewarding issue.”

La Serenissima performs across the UK and internationally. It has given the first UK performance of Brescianello’s opera Tisbe (2018) and the modern premiere of Caldara’s opera Lucio Papirio Dittatore (2019). In 2021, the group performed in Wigmore Hall’s live-stream series and has since delighted live audiences across the UK.

La Serenissima is proud to have as its Honorary Patron, His Excellency The Italian Ambassador to the UK.
