Handel’s oratorio La Resurrezione takes the Easter story and turns it into pure opera. Laurence Cummings brings all his flair for the baroque to this period-instrument performance.
Before he came to London, Handel took baroque Italy by storm. They called him “the dear Saxon” – and with his Easter oratorio La Resurrezione this 23-year old genius showed exactly what he could do. It might not be the Messiah, but La Resurrezione is an absolute knockout: flamboyant, unashamedly operatic, and written as a showpiece for some of the most brilliant singers in the world. Every performance is an occasion, and today, with baroque specialist Laurence Cummings directing some of the freshest vocal stars on the UK scene, this should be an Easter celebration with a dazzling difference
