“When love conquers pain, a new star shines in heaven…” Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin is a tale of heartbreak wrung from the most tender depths of the soul, and every performance is an emotional journey. So who better, as companion and guide, than baritone Benjamin Appl – a student of the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whose youthful spirit is matched by an unrivalled insight into the imaginative world of German romantic song? But first, together with pianist Simon Lepper, he gives the London premiere of a poignant new song cycle by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lang, which sets all of Schubert’s flower references and was composed especially for Appl.
