The Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Max and Peggy Morgan Prize Winner, Maria Wloszczowska, will be performing at this lunchtime concert. She will be accompanied by Sophia Rahman.

Violinist Maria Włoszczowska is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician worldwide and currently makes her home in London. As First Prize winner of the Michail Elsky International Violin Competition, Minsk, as well as finalist and prize winner of the XV International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in 2016, she has most recently performed as soloist in Poland, Belarus, France, Holland, Germany, Belgium and the UK.

Maria appears in recitals, concertos and international chamber music festivals, collaborating with Maxim Vengerov, Robert Levin, Philippe Graffin, Alasdair Beatson, Nobuko Imai, James Baillieu, Roger Chase and Sam Haywood amongst others. She has performed with most of Poland’s symphonic and chamber orchestras and in many of Europe’s concert halls, supported by Poland’s Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

She was selected as the recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Emily Anderson Prize, performing at the Wigmore Hall for the final of Young Classical Artist Trust (YCAT). She is supported by the Hattori Foundation and became an RPS Young Artist in 2014. In Spring 2016, Maria returned to the Wigmore Hall for a recital as part of the Young Producers series with the pianist Alasdair Beatson.

After earning a degree from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in her hometown of Warsaw, Maria went on to study with Leonid Kerbel in Brussels. She completed her Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London having been under the tutelage of Maxim Vengerov since 2011. Maria is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma course with András Keller at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Her debut recording of Mozart’s complete Church Sonatas for two violins and organ with Maxim Vengerov was recently featured on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’.

Sophia Rahman has recorded piano concertos with Scottish Ensemble, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and thirty chamber music discs for companies including Linn records, cpo, Guild, Naxos, ASV, Dutton/Epoch, Meridian and Resonus. She is a guest-coach on the string Masters programme at the University of Limerick and of junior chamber music at the Sibelius Academy, Finland. She has appeared in recital with Steven Isserlis, Thomas Riebl, distinguished wind players such as Robert Plane and John Anderson, and works regularly with her partner, the violinist, violist and conductor Andres Kaljuste.

Sophia Rahman has acted as a class pianist at IMS/Prussia Cove since 2008, for Kim Kashkashian, Atar Arad, Hartmut Rohde and, for the last seven years, Steven Isserlis. Her interest in this work began as a class pianist for the legendary William Pleeth at the Britten-Pears School. She has played for the Samling Foundation and is an Artistic Co-director of the Jigsaw Players’ Concert Series, a chamber ensemble based in London.

Sophia Rahman studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School under Peter Norris, with additional guidance from Vlado Perlemuter and Louis Kentner. She took a first-class honours degree in English from King’s College London and completed her piano studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Alexander Kelly and Malcolm Martineau.

She was the winner of the Royal Overseas League’s Accompanist Award and the Liza Fuchsova Memorial Prize for a chamber music pianist in consecutive years.
