Nishla Smith, jazz singer, piano (Tom Harris) and double bass (Misha Mullov-Abbado)
Friday 03 May 2024
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Nishla Smith is joined by two of the UK’s finest jazz musicians – Tom Harris on piano, and Misha Mullov-Abbado on double bass – for a concert comprised of beloved jazz standards from Bewitched to Paper Moon, threaded through with Nishla’s “darkly gorgeous” original songs (Downbeat USA). This is her first appearance following a month playing a role created for her in a new adaptation of Shelagh Delaney’s classic play ‘A Taste of Honey’ at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.
Nishla is a recent alumni of Serious Music’s prestigious Take Five cohort and the recipient of a 2022 Peter Whittingham Jazz Award. She is one-third of cross-disciplinary theatre collective Ulita, and leads an original jazz band, the Nishla Smith Quintet, who released a critically acclaimed debut album on Whirlwind Recordings. Last year she spent Spring playing a bird in Atri Banerjee’s lauded production of ‘Kes’, for which she won a UK Theatre Award. Nishla’s concert today will feature a set of beloved jazz standards and original song, and is her first appearance following a month playing a role created for her in a new adaptation of Shelagh Delaney’s classic play ‘A Taste of Honey’ at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.
