The BBC New Generation Artists scheme has a reputation for spotting emerging talent, but even so, the Consone Quartet is something special – the very first string quartet on the scheme to play on period instruments, using the techniques and instruments of the late 18^th century to get straight to the heart of some of the most beautiful – and intimate – ever written. There’s wit from Haydn and Brahms at his most unbuckled, as well as a piece of history in the making – the London premiere of The Bridges of Königsberg by Gavin Bryars, 80 this year and still as engaging and provocative as ever.
