Spirited, exuberant and unashamedly entertaining, the Grammy-nominated Apollo’s Fire is a period-instrument ensemble with a flamboyant difference – and under its founding director Jeannette Sorrell, it’s been described as “the USA’s hottest baroque band”. Tonight at St. Martin-in-the-Fields they shake the dust off Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. And then they head downstairs into the Crypt to open their Blues Café 1610 – an uproarious late-night tour through the songs, dances and battling fiddles of seventeenth century nightlife. Monteverdi rubs shoulders with the Rolling Stones and Dowland clinks glasses with Woody Guthrie: this is Early Music running off the leash. Well it’s Saturday night, after all…
