“When love conquers pain, a new star shines in heaven…” Schubert’s Die Schone Müllerin is a tale of heartbreak wrung from the most tender depths of the soul, and every performance is an emotional journey. So who better, as companion and guide, than baritone Benjamin Appl – a student of the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whose youthful spirit is matched by an unrivalled insight into the imaginative world of German romantic song? But first, together with pianist Simon Lepper, he gives give the London premiere of a poignant new song cycle by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lang, which sets all of Schubert’s flower references and was composed especially for Appl.
