As a boy, Steve Reich crossed the USA by luxury train. “I now look back and think that, if I had been in Europe during this period, as a Jew I would have had to ride very different trains” he says. Today, Different Trains is just one of three musical journeys across the horrors of the 20th century, as the Carducci Quartet performs Osvaldo Golijov’s Yiddishbuk – inspired by children interned at Terezin – and Shostakovich’s furious musical protest against totalitarianism. Readings from the Terezin anthology I Never Saw Another Butterfly provide devastating human context for these three sonic testaments of sorrow, anger, and defiance.
