Performers

Founded in 1963, the New London Singers are one of London’s most exciting vocal ensembles. They perform most frequently at St Martin-in-the-Fields on Trafalgar Square but recent concerts have taken them to a variety of venues in the capital, including St James’s Piccadilly, St Paul’s Covent Garden, St James’s Sussex Gardens and Kings Place.

As well as concert performances, the choir is often to be found singing evensong at such venues as Westminster Abbey (2011-2013), Southwark Cathedral (2014-2016) and St Paul’s Cathedral (2016).

TV and audio recording credits include the Alan Titchmarsh Show, The One Show and Classic Goldie, a follow up to the popular BBC Maestro competition, which featured musical director Ivor Setterfield. The choir have also featured on Joseph Calleja’s album (2012) celebrating the great American tenor Mario Lanza, and on Bill Turnbull’s Relaxing Classics (2016).

NLS have been a touring choir for much of their long history with recent destinations including Jersey, Paris, Poznan and Seville. Plans for a tour to Lisbon in October 2017 are well under way.

Recent season highlights include a complete performance of Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles (2011/12), Monteverdi’s Vespers (2012/13), Bach’s St John Passion (2013/14), Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music and Chilcott’s A Little Jazz Mass (2014/15) and sacred music by Martin, Poulenc, Durufle and Villette (2015/16).

The 2016/17 season saw NLS perform Bach’s Mass in B minor at St Martin-in the-Fields and Durufle’s Requiem at St John’s Smith Square as part of the Tenebrae Holy Week Festival.

Ivor Setterfield has appeared all over Europe including Spain, Germany, Estonia and extensively across France and Italy. Ivor has performed at all the major London venues conducting prestigious orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the City of London Sinfonia, the London Mozart Players and the Hanover Band.

In 2006 Ivor appeared in his own documentary series on Channel Five, The Singing Estate, which was nominated for the prestigious Rose d’Or award, and in 2008 he appeared in the BBC2 programme Maestro as mentor to Drum & Bass DJ Goldie. Ivor again mentored Goldie in 2009 as he composed a classical piece on the theme of ‘evolution’ for the Family Prom, with this composition journey shown on BBC2. Other television appearances include 10 Best Choral Masterpieces on BBC4, The Richard & Judy Show, The Wright Show on Five and the BBC One Show.
