Crypt Lates: New Jazz Voices
Wednesday 26 October 2022
7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Alex Webb Trio accompanies rising stars Freddie Benedict and Lulu Pierre, part of the next wave of jazz vocalists. Benedict has already distinguished himself in the classical field as well as jazz, as a choral scholar at Kings College London and Trinity Head Chorister. He is now studying for a master’s degree in jazz singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As the lead male singer with National Youth Jazz Orchestra, he has performed all over the UK, including Ronnie Scott’s. He is also a talented multi-linguist, equally happy performing material in Spanish and Portuguese.
Lulu Pierre is a startling new arrival on the London jazz vocal scene, who has proved herself to be a classic Torch Song stylist in the tradition of Julie London. She can also swing out like Sarah Vaughan, with a voice that can move from a seductive sweetness to a lived-in rasp. With the experienced piano accompanist Alex Webb and his trio, she performs evergreens from the Great American Songbook, jazz classics and heartbreaking Torch songs.
Alex Webb is a pianist, arranger and songwriter with a long history of working with leading jazz vocalists; his songs have been recorded by Liane Carroll, China Moses, Jo Harrop, Allan Harris, Cherise, Ayanna Witter-Johnson and many others.
