Ex Cathedra: Summer Music by Candlelight

Saturday 25 June 2022

8:00 pm - 9:15 pm

In a candlelit St Martin in the Fields, virtuoso chamber choir Ex Cathedra presents music and readings inspired by the spirit of summer. Pure enchantment…

As a summer day fades into evening, there’s something unforgettable about the atmosphere in St Martin in the Fields. So when the shadows lengthen and candles start to flicker in the twilight, what could be more magical than to feel the air shimmer with song? Jeffrey Skidmore and his virtuoso chamber choir Ex Cathedra have taken that moment and distilled it into music: a seamless sequence of words and choral singing drawn from birdsong, sacred music, and (of course) that sunny, unmistakable sensation that the holidays are just around the corner. Step out of the city, and let your spirit bask.

Please note that this performance will last for approximately 80 minutes without an interval.

Ex Cathedra is a leading UK choir and Early Music ensemble with a repertoire that reaches from the 12th to the 21st centuries, and are known for their passion for seeking out the best, the unfamiliar and the unexpected in the choral repertoire and for giving dynamic performances underpinned by detailed research.

Founded in 1969 by Jeffrey Skidmore, the group has grown into a unique musical resource, comprising specialist chamber choir, vocal Consort, period-instrument orchestra and a thriving education programme, aiming to explore, research and commission the finest choral music and to set the highest standards in performance and training.

We present a series of concerts in our home city of Birmingham, where we are an Associate Artist at the B:Music venues Symphony Hall & Town Hall – across the Midlands, and in London. We enjoy invitations to appear at festivals and concert series and have appeared as far afield as New York and Tel Aviv.

As well as bringing new insights to choral masterpieces, we are committed to expanding the choral repertoire. We have recorded three best-selling CDs of newly re-discovered music from the Latin American Baroque and are regarded as leading interpreters of music from the French Baroque.

We are also proud of our reputation for championing new choral music. Highlights have included Stockhausen’s World Parliament from Mittwoch aus Licht, James MacMillan’s oratorio Seven Angels, A Shakespeare Masque by the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and composer Sally Beamish, and several major works from John Joubert, Alec Roth and Liz Dilnot Johnson.

Ex Cathedra has made a significant number of highly regarded recordings for ASV, Hyperion, NMC, Orchid Classics, SOMM, Signum, and on its own label, including the Gramophone Award-winning  A French Baroque Diva with Carolyn Sampson. The most recent release is a CD of choral music and songs by Penelope Thwaites titled From Five Continents.
