Haydn – Symphony No 94 in G Surprise (arr Salomon 1795)                                                Mozart – Divertimento No 3 in FHaydn – Symphony No 101 in D The Clock (arr Salomon 1795)

The Feinstein Ensemble                                               Martin Feinstein Director/Flute

In 1795 Haydn began to sign over the rights of his great London symphonies to his good friend and orchestra leader J. P. Salomon, with the permission to do whatever he wanted with them. Salomon’s arrangements are extraordinary. Brilliantly conceived and skilfully orchestrated, they are masterpieces in their own right. Tonight’s programme includes two of these beautiful arrangements: The “Clock” and the “Surprise”, performed by one of London’s leading period groups,The Feinstein Ensemble.“The balance between the flute and string orchestra is always beautifully judged and the interplay between them most sensitive.”

“I’ve heard the Brandenburg Concertos so many times, and in so many contexts. Yet what the Feinstein Ensemble did with them had revelatory freshness.”
