Miloš Forman’s 1984 movie Amadeus is a masterpiece from beginning to end, telling of the ambition, obsession and jealousy that nearly thwarted the career of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and of the sublime music that poured out of a genius whose foibles and vulgarity were all too human. This concert at London’s iconic church of St Martin-in-the-Fields presents Mozart both excitable and sublime, his dramatic Symphony No. 25 and his beauteous concerto for flute and harp. Both are contextualized by music from the villain of Amadeus, court composer and nemesis of Mozart, Antonio Salieri. Was he really the ‘patron saint of mediocrity’? You decide.
