Georgi Dimitrov (guitar)
Friday 13 March 2026
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
This programme traces a distinctive English lineage for the guitar beginning with two Fancies by John Dowland and Daniel Bacheler’s Mounsier’s Almaine, examples of the refined melancholy and intricate counterpoint of the Elizabethan lute tradition. That spirit of clarity and poise echoes through the 20th century in works by Lennox Berkeley, where neoclassical balance meets expressive warmth. Together, these pieces form a dialogue between old and new—between the English Renaissance and its 20th-century reinvention.

Georgi Dimitrov guitar
Georgi Dimitrov began his studies at the National Music School in Sofia, Bulgaria, before completing his undergraduate degree cum laude at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Paolo Pegoraro. Awarded the Bicentenary Scholarship to study with Michael Lewin at the Royal Academy of Music, he gained his MA with Distinction and is currently completing the post-Masters Professional Diploma.
Winner of over twenty international competitions, Georgi received First and Special Prizes at the 2021 Maurizio Biasini Competition and, in 2022, became the inaugural European Bach Guitar Award laureate. His acclaimed Naxos album was described as “one of the best guitar recordings of music by J. S. Bach” (MusicWeb International), leading to his debut at Bachfest Leipzig in 2024. That year he also won the Blyth Watson Concerto Prize and was named a Julian Bream Trust Scholar.
As co-holder of the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ New Elizabethan Award, Georgi made his Wigmore Hall debut in 2025 and has since appeared at Surrey Hills International Music Festival, Saffron Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, and other leading venues. Future plans include a Linn Records album of music by Dowland and Henze marking their 2026 anniversaries.
He has performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez across Europe and the US and recently appeared as soloist in Richard Rodney Bennett’s Guitar Concerto for the Julian Bream Trust. Media highlights include Bulgarian National Television, Bulgarian Artist Magazine, and BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, with critics praising his “refined performance with deep understanding” and “beautifully nuanced playing.”
